BOLDkids

Brain Organisation In Limb Differences

Who Are We?

BOLDkids is a unique collaboration between Professor Tamar Makin, an expert on brain plasticity at the University of Cambridge (MRC CBU), and Dr Dorothy Cowie, an expert on motor development at her Durham University Movement Lab.

Despite their missing limb(s), children with limb differences develop remarkable motor skills, making use of different body parts to independently explore the world. As a group, we are interested in how these unique motor skills and adaptations interface with brain plasticity (the brain’s ability to change and adapt to our experiences in life) as the children develop.

What Do We Do?

We study everyday behaviour and brain development in children with limb differences, aiming to keep building a better understanding of the amazing ways in which these children develop to not only cope with, but thrive with, their limb differences. We work closely with Reach, a charity specialising in supporting children with upper limb differences, and have gotten to know lots of the amazing families they support.

Get Involved!

Your child could be a BOLD kid too! We are always on the lookout for children with limb differences to take part in our research - this could be online, at home, or at one of our universities. We’re always more than happy to chat, and you can call or message us on 07833 968229
